May is National Walking Month

Campaign Image

Organised by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, the campaign aims to encourage us to swap transport for walking and notice the big differences that small steps can make.

Walking is good for our minds and our bodies. A daily brisk walk can boost energy, lift mood, and make everyday activities easier. There are lots of ways you can fit ten minutes of brisk walking into your life, whether you're walking to work, stepping out at lunchtime, walking to the shops or local park, or taking the dog for a walk. Why not download the free Active 10 app to track your walking progress? By swapping a short drive for a short walk, you can also help reduce air pollution, congestion and road danger - whilst saving yourself some money and getting active in the process!

West Sussex offers a beautiful and varied landscape with walks for everyone to enjoy, see the Experience West Sussex website. The Easy Countryside Trails booklet, on the West Sussex County Council website, features routes that are suitable for all, including wheelchair and pushchair users, families and the less mobile.

Contact your local Wellbeing team for the latest information about current walking programmes and for advice and support about generally becoming more active.

For anyone living with a long-term health condition, the We are undefeatable website is a great source of inspiration that aims to help people to move more in a way that works for them.

So, what are you waiting for ...  get outside and see where walking will take you! You’ll be amazed at how even a short walk can make a big difference to the way you feel!
